Briant Jacobs was born in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, a son of Henry C. Jacobs and Alberta Larsen Jacobs. He attended Snow College and Brigham Young University. He received his Ph.D. in American Literature from the State University of Iowa. Less than a month after receiving his degree, Jacobs entered the Navy. After completing his training he was assigned to communications duty aboard the U.S.S. Guam. He went on to become faculty in the English department of BYU. Jacobs wrote literature lessons published in the Relief Society magazine. He married Barbara Tietjen August 28, 1939.
