Muriel Jenkins Heal

Muriel was born September 8, 1921, in Springfield, Illinois, to James Jenkins and Blanche Elder Alkire Jenkins. She received her early education in Illinois and graduated from Lanphier High School in Springfield, Illinois. She and her younger sister, Betty Jean, moved to Utah as converts of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints "to be close to the Church". She studied languages and music at Brigham Young University. On April 29, 1946, Muriel married William Ward Heal, a native of Provo, Utah. She was a beautician by profession and enjoyed twenty years of selling real estate with her husband in their own business. After William died in 1982, Muriel remarried to L. Gordon Bywater in 1988.

Muriel served as Utah State President of the National League of American Pen Women, and enjoyed many years in the League of Utah Writers, and Utah State Poetry Association. Her poems, articles and children's stories were among many of her cherished achievements. She won The American Publication Award for her poetry book "Stretching Toward Wild Swans" in 1994.
