Shirley M. Howard was born on August 1, 1925 in Beaver, Utah to Walter and Margery Adams Mackerell. Shirley earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at the College of Southern Utah (now SUU) and earned her Master of Arts degree at Arizona State University. Shirley married Bruce Howard. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and President of the Faculty Wives at the College of Southern Utah. She was a gifted artist, a published poet, a journalist, and a historical scholar.
