First published in 1887, this is a sensational detective story set in the imagined Old West, exploiting common 19th century stereotypes of Mormons. This story was based in part on Robert Louis Stevenson's "Story of the Destroying Angel" and includes the first appearance of the character Sherlock Holmes.
