A Sunday School Answer

Bradford Fillmore

Stanford, California: Dialogue Foundation, Winter 1998

  • Bradford Fillmore: Author
Fiction, Short Story
A man is woken up from his bored stupor during Sunday school one week when Arthur Williams, recently returned home from war, challenges the teacher's viewpoint about Nephi killing Laban. Arthur declares that killing is sin, no matter what, and that if God told him to do it he wouldn't listen. The teacher refuses to see his point of view and he leaves the room. Then an elderly woman who lost her husband in the war stands up, defends Arthur's position, and leaves to find him and try to reassure him. With the two dissenters gone, the class proceeds as if nothing has happened.
