All his life, Darby has been taught about Jesus and has looked for faith in his own heart, but has been unable to find it. He eventually joins the "Mormon" Church in order to marry the woman he has fallen in love with, though he feels guilty for pretending to a faith he doesn't have. When a chance occurrence reveals to him the location of a former acquaintance who escaped justice after committing murder, Darby tracks him down, determined to see justice satisfied. Along the way, he develops a concept of Jesus that he just might be able to believe in.
