Lost on Both Sides

Don McDermott

Stanford, California: Dialogue Foundation, Winter 1993

  • Don McDermott: Author
Fiction, Short Story
A man thinks he sees a ghost while staying at an acquaintance's apartment. He finds out from the landlady that a previous tenant-- a girl he knew in high school-- had died in the apartment building. As he gathers more details, he concludes that the ghost he saw might have been the runaway missionary she once harbored at her apartment. The episode with the ghost contributes to the rockiness of the man's relationship with his girlfriend, and he goes back to the apartment to think about how, in a way, both he and the girl from high school are lost.
