The year 1989 marked the one hundredth and fiftieth year since the founding of Nauvoo, as it was called by Joseph Smith and his Latter-day Saint followers who first arrived there in 1839. Much painstaking research from original sources has been done on the years of the Latter-day Saint occupation from 1839 through 1846. One significant result has been the establishment of Nauvoo Restoration, Inc., which has led in the historic preservation and restoration of many sites. This panoramic overview seeks to give the reader an understanding of the entire story of Nauvoo and the many peoples who made it beautiful--with the hope that such appreciation will inspire further enjoyment and study of this part of American History.
