The story centers around a group of pioneers gathered for an evening of dancing. Clair observes as her vivacious friend draws the attention of many men. When others start to mock her about her physical blemishes, Clair moves to a secluded area, where she overhears a ward member forcibly asserting an offer of plural marriage on an unwilling woman. Clair is then drawn back to the dance scene as some roguish men and boys, including the bishop's son, force their way in and make advances to a young girl.
