Nora Blake, a schoolteacher in rural Idaho, becomes acquainted with Latter-day Saint people and culture as she lives with the Bishop's family. She works hard in the school and community, making a difference for many people living there. One of these is Jed Oliver, a man who Nora teaches to read and develops a connection with. She is devastated to learn he is leaving to serve a mission, but she finds plenty to keep her occupied between school and her newly acquired homestead.
