Hugh Elwood is looking for a way to progress his legal and political career. When a pair of missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints arrives in town and divides public opinion just before the election for the new judge, he sees his chance to gain support by disparaging them, even though he believes in their doctrine and ideals. Edgar Belnap, in contrast, defends the missionaries against a mob. Edgar is then called into court on assault charges, and his love, Edith reveals that she has converted to the Church and accuses Hugh, the new judge, of persecuting the missionaries for his ambition, and Hugh dismisses the charge.
