The author describes his journey to Tahiti on the Monique, which was known as the swiftest vessel in the islands. However, what was meant to be a two-day journey ended up taking many more on account of setbacks and a lack of wind. The author commented that like how the fastest ship is useless without the backing of the wind, we need the backing of the Spirit. The ship eventually arrived at its destination, but on a later trip, it was sunk.
