The Walker

Matthew James Babcock

Stanford, California: Dialogue Foundation, Summer 2006

  • Matthew James Babcock: Author
Fiction, Short Story
A man has seen the Walker--an enigmatic figure in a bright orange hunter's cap--at every major "first" in his life. But now that he awaits his wife first biopsy results, the Walker is nowhere to be seen. The man walks into the freezing morning and reflects on his first kiss, first home run, first love, first child being born. When he is confronted by two teenagers about what he's doing wandering around, he recognizes the Walker in himself.

Our firsts and lasts were leaves burned

the hour we left.

-Ted Hughes
