Hanks tells of his experience working at a mine to earn money and of the horrible accident that left him permanently injured and blind. He describes wanting to die many times and the struggle to support himself and pay back his debts afterward. He eventually learns how to function, and he pays back his hospital bills, gets an education, and marries.
