Fiction, Short Story
Selena and Belle Baldwin, sisters, are traveling to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake in a wagon train commanded by Lon Holiday, captain of fifty, and Josiah Blodgett, captain of ten. Selena's fiance has died at Winter Quarters, and Selena, in bitterness and sorrow, cannot be comforted. Belle, a large, strong woman, trades for a pair of Indian moccasins, and finding them too small for her, she sends Selena to offer them to Josiah who has injured his foot. Josiah attaches marital significance to the gift of the moccasins, according to an Indian custom. -Publisher's synopsis
