After the death of her husband, Sarah finds herself on a tight budget to take care of her two little boys. She realizes after cashing her check, that the teller gave her $10 extra, and decides to walk back through a snow storm to return it. However, she feels disillusioned with the principle of honesty when the teller is rude to her when she returns the money. She discovers that her actions were worth it when, in her little boy’s journal that night, he wrote that honesty is the best policy.
